The Iluka History Group is celebrating the Centenary of the Iluka Soldiers' Memorial Hall.  Join us for the official ceremony at the hall, (Iluka Museum, 4 Charles St Iluka) on Sat 30 Sep 2023.

A Brief History
In the 1920s the tiny town of Iluka had no community hall, so it was decided to build one which would be a memorial to the brave Iluka boys who fought in the Great War. Fund raising began and the Iluka Soldiers’ Memorial Hall was built for the cost of 340 pounds (approximately AUD$594) using locals as volunteer labour under the supervision of a builder, Mr Edward Chapman.
 
The official opening was a big affair for the village, held on the 5th October 1923. There was a gala ball held that night and guests came from far and wide to celebrate.
 
The hall became the hub of Iluka's community life. It was the venue for meetings, many sad farewells, joyous engagements, weddings and birthday celebrations. There were seafood banquets, fundraising events, dances and gala balls held here. Even Santa found his way across the mighty Clarence over the years to attend the community’s Christmas celebrations. In the 1940s to 1960s a movie picture show operated in the hall on alternate weekends.
 
To celebrate the Soldiers’ Hall Centenary the Iluka History Group will host special movie nights and matinees during the festival. There will also be commemorative displays and guided tours of the Museum during this time.
